The photobook Layers of Memories brings together three series that photographer Park Hyunggeun worked on over roughly seventeen years: Jejudo (2005–2022), Forbidden Forest (2009–2013), and The Tumen River Project (2014–2017). Moving through landscapes marked by the memory of the Jeju April 3rd Uprising, sites that have been turned into tourist attractions or redevelopment zones, and cities and border areas along the Tumen River, the artist visually excavates the layers of violence and historical traces embedded in contemporary Korean landscapes. The book includes essays by critics Elisa Medde and Jang Nayoon, and is a co-publication between the Amsterdam-based art book publisher The Eriskay Connection and the Seoul-based photography publisher Vostok Press. The essay included in the Korean edition were translated into Korean by Hankyung Ryu.
사진집 『기억의 지층』은 사진가 박형근이 약 17년에 걸쳐 기록해 온 세 연작 〈Jejudo〉, 〈Forbidden Forest〉, 〈The Tumen River Project〉를 한 권에 엮어, 오늘의 풍경 속에 겹겹이 쌓인 한국 근현대사의 흔적을 따라가게 하는 작업이다. 제주 4·3 사건의 기억이 스며 있는 관광지와 재개발 현장, 분단과 탈북의 경로가 교차하는 두만강 유역의 도시와 자연을 촬영한 이미지들이 한데 모여, 한 장소에 공존하는 시간의 층위와 보이지 않는 폭력의 흔적을 서서히 드러낸다. 이 책은 한국의 사진 전문 출판사 보스토크 프레스가 기획과 편집을 맡고, 네덜란드 아트북 출판사 에리스케이커넥션과 협업해 디자인과 제작을 진행한 공동 출판 프로젝트이며, 수록된 영어 에세이의 한국어 번역은 류한경이 담당했다.
