Hankyung Ryu

류한경은 서울 출신의 사진가, 번역가, 작가로 현재 뉴욕주 로체스터를 기반으로 활동한다. 서로 다른 이념과 종교, 정치적 힘이 공존하는 한국에서 성장했으며, 사진을 통해 한국인의 내면과 문화적 기억, 역사로부터 비롯된 보이지 않는 정서적 흔적을 탐구한다. 특히 몸에 남은 정동의 잔여에 주목하며, 개인과 공동체, 내면과 외부 세계, 형이상학적인 것과 물질적인 것 사이를 오가는 이미지를 만든다. 첫 저서 『가장 밝은 검정으로』는 한겨레출판에서 출간되었고, 여러 소설과 에세이를 번역해 왔다. 2026년 5월 로체스터 공과대학교에서 Photography and Related Media 전공으로 MFA 학위를 받았다.

Hankyung Ryu is a Seoul-born photographer, translator, and writer based in Rochester. Ryu grew up in South Korea, where conflicting ideologies, religions, and political forces coexist. Through photography, Ryu explores the Korean psyche, cultural memory, and the unseen emotional traces of history. His work pays particular attention to the affective residues that remain in the body. Ryu’s photographs move between the personal and communal, the internal and external, and the metaphysical and physical. Ryu has published the photobook With the Brightest Darkness with one of Korea’s leading publishers and has translated a range of novels and essays. Ryu received an MFA in Photography and Related Media from Rochester Institute of Technology in May 2026.
