Hankyung Ryu
Hankyung Ryu is a photographer, translator, and writer based in Rochester, New York, originally from Seoul, South Korea. Having grown up in a place where conflicting ideologies, religions, and political forces coexist, Ryu uses photography to explore the Korean psyche, cultural memory, and the unseen emotional traces of history. Alongside this personal work, Ryu collaborates with editors and writers on interviews, portraits, and editorial projects across books and magazines. Ryu’s first book, With the Brightest Black (가장 밝은 검정으로), is a collection of interviews and photographs with non male creators about their tattoos, published by Hankyoreh Publishing in Seoul. Ryu has contributed photographs to outlets including GQ Korea, VOSTOK Magazine, Around, and Channel Yes, and is currently pursuing an MFA in Photography and Related Media at Rochester Institute of Technology.
